Red Rocks, Lookout Mountain
or a private deck?

Three favorite spots for engagement photos west of Denver, compared honestly by Mily & Danny, who live just up the road from both.

The short answer

All three are about 25 minutes from downtown Denver and close to each other. Which one fits depends on the look you want and how much privacy matters to you.

  1. Choose Red Rocks for the red rockTowering sandstone that looks like nowhere else, with views east toward Denver and the plains.
  2. Choose Lookout Mountain for the city belowPine-lined overlooks above Golden, with Denver spread out below and city lights after dark.
  3. Choose a private deck for the peaks and the quietAn unobstructed view west to the Indian Peaks, secluded in the pines, with nobody else around.

Side by side

What to expect at each, from the look of your photos to who else will be there.

Red Rocks Park

The look
Huge red sandstone rocks and desert plants.
The view
East, over Denver and the plains.
Privacy
One of the busiest parks in Colorado. Expect hikers, tourists and other photographers, especially on weekends.
Permits
A Denver mountain park: small groups with handheld cameras are fine, no drones. See our permit guide.
Getting there
Paved lots, then narrow, uneven trails. On concert days the amphitheatre closes to visitors around 2 pm.
Best time
Weekday mornings, when the rock glows and the crowds are smaller.

Lookout Mountain

The look
Ponderosa pines, rocky overlooks and the winding Lariat Loop road.
The view
East, over Golden and Denver, with city lights after dark.
Privacy
The overlooks are popular, with cars, cyclists and visitors to the Buffalo Bill Museum coming and going.
Permits
Lookout Mountain Park and Colorow Point are Denver mountain parks. The Nature Center is Jefferson County Open Space, where paid photographers need a $125 yearly permit.
Getting there
Small pull-offs and lots along a curvy road. Short walks to the overlooks.
Best time
Evening, then stay for the city lights.

A private deck (our home)

The look
An open deck, a flagstone patio and a ponderosa forest, so three looks in one session.
The view
West, unobstructed, straight to the Indian Peaks. The sun sets behind them.
Privacy
Secluded and private. Only your group is here, so nobody walks through your photos and a proposal stays a surprise.
Permits
No park permit. Your session covers the place.
Getting there
Parking at the house, a restroom for outfit changes and short, easy walks between spots.
Best time
Golden hour, as the sun goes down behind the peaks.

Why couples choose a private spot

  1. Nothing between you and the mountainsFrom the deck, the view west to the Indian Peaks is wide open, so the mountains fill the frame behind you.
  2. Secluded, in the pinesThe house sits quietly in the forest above Genesee. No trail traffic, no tour buses, just the wind in the trees.
  3. Private, so you can relaxWith no strangers watching, it's easier to laugh, hug and be yourselves. Your photographer and family can wait out of sight until the moment.

Park hours and rules change. We checked them in October 2026; confirm with the park before you go, and check the Red Rocks calendar for show days.
